Rye High School Wrestlers Compete with Pride at Section One Championships

Rye High School varsity boys wrestlers demonstrated outstanding determination, resilience and sportsmanship during a demanding two-day Section One Boys Wrestling Championship weekend, representing their school and community with pride from start to finish.

The team began competition early Feb. 7, wrestling throughout the day and returning home late that evening before turning around to compete again on Feb. 8. Despite the long hours and physical demands, Rye’s athletes continued to compete with focus, grit and perseverance.

Several Rye wrestlers earned podium finishes in their respective weight classes. Tyler Walsh finished with a 5-3 record, placing sixth in the 157-pound weight class. Jason Gaylord posted a 5-1 record, earning second place in the 165-pound weight class. Jack Anderson finished 6-1, earning second place in the 215-pound weight class.

Beyond the podium finishes, the weekend highlighted the physical and mental toughness required in wrestling. Each of these student-athletes faced challenges throughout the season, continuing to work, improve and trust their coaches. Their success serves as a strong example of how hard work, perseverance and resilience pay off.

The team is led by head coach Brian Scher, along with assistant coaches Greg Domestico, Billy Calvacca and Jalin Badillo, whose leadership and support were instrumental throughout the season and championship weekend.

Jason Gaylord and Jack Anderson will compete at the NYSPHSAA Division I Wrestling State Championships on Feb. 27-28 at the MVP Arena in Albany.

Rye City School District congratulates the entire wrestling team and coaching staff on a hard-fought, resilient and commendable championship performance.
