Lions Recognize Service to the Community
As part of its “Year of the Youth” initiative and mission to support community service groups and programs, the Larchmont Mamaroneck & Port Chester/Rye Brook Lions presented three grants of $1,000 each to Pediatric Cancer Foundation, LMC Media, and the Council of Community Services at their December 19 luncheon meeting.
Grant recipients were selected by a committee consisting of LM Lions President Lina Pasquale and Board members Carolyn Gallaher and Jason Summers.
Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Junior Committee – accepted by Lion Nancy Joselson
Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Junior Committee is a group of committed and compassionate high school students dedicated to the mission of eradicating children’s cancer. This is accomplished by raising funds for ground-breaking research and early-phase clinical trials that are conducted by world-renowned doctors at supported hospitals.
LMC Media: Accepted by Lion Mike Witsch for Lion Dena Schumacher
LMC Media will be producing a children’s program similar to Sesame Street but focused on Larchmont and Mamaroneck. It will use animation, puppets, and real footage to encourage early-age development and teach important life lessons for children as well as themes of inclusivity and community.
Council of Community Services of Port Chester, Town of Rye, Rye Brook/Mary O’Connell Campership Fund: Accepted by Lion Stacey Harris
For more than 30 years the Council of Community Services has been helping underprivileged children attend summer camp through this program. The funds will pay the costs for Port Chester and Rye Brook children from low-income families to attend local summer camps, such as those run by the Carver Center and Don Bosco Community Center.
The LM Lions continued this recognition of community service at its Points of Light event on January 12. This event is the vital fundraising source for virtually all of the donations the LM Lions give back to support these groups and the community. At this event, community service awards were presented to Jason Summers, director of The Sandbox Theatre, OCRA, a 4-year civics program at Mamaroneck High School, and The Carver Center, which provides a wide range of programs and assistance to Port Chester residents.
