Flutist from “President's Own”
Marine Band Comes to HHS

Gunnery Sgt Heather Zenobia, a flutist in the United States “President’s Own” Marine Band visited the HHS Concert Band on October 14. When not performing for ceremonial functions at the White House, the band tours the country and most recently performed at Carnegie Hall. Gunnery Sgt Zenobia shared warm up techniques, exercises, strategies and discussed her journey as a musician, specifically her day to day life as a musician in an elite military band. Students also had an opportunity to play alongside Gunnery Sgt Zenobia.
Gunnery Sgt. Zenobia performs with the Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra at the White House, in the Washington, D.C., area, and across the country during the band’s annual concert tour. Harrison High School Concert Band Director Deanna Loertscher was thrilled her application to the Marine Band’s educational outreach program brought Gunnery Sgt Zenobia to the high school. The Marine Band sponsors programs as school’s throughout the country in communities where they perform.
Students found the experience to be “inspiring” and “unforgettable” and were inspired by someone who has dedicated her life to perfecting “what we try to improve every day.”
