Midland School Second Graders Explore Coding and Robotics

Second grade students at Midland School put their creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills into action during an engaging hands-on STEAM session led by MakeInspires, a provider specializing in robotics, coding, engineering and creative technology experiences for K-12 students.

During the session, the students explored introductory coding concepts using Indi robots, discovering how different colors could program the mini robotic cars to make 45-degree and 90-degree turns along custom-designed tracks. Working in pairs, the second graders applied these coding concepts by designing and building their own custom tracks using colorful coding tiles. As they tested their creations, the students collaborated to problem solve, guide their robotic cars through turns and obstacles and kept the vehicles on course.

In addition to the hands-on building activities, the students completed worksheets focused on directional movement, sequencing, shapes and coding patterns as part of the lesson.

At the conclusion of the session, the students presented their original track designs to classmates, showcasing their growing understanding of foundational STEAM concepts. The hands-on experience fostered creativity, communication and perseverance as the students worked together to rest and refine their designs.
